Pig Pickin Thursdays
Chef Mercer’s Pig Pickin’ has become a local’s summer tradition at the Mesa Grill, situated atop Airport Mesa in Sedona.
Chef Mercer Mohr grew up part time in Pinehurst North Carolina. While attending East Carolina University in the early 80’s, Chef Mercer served as social director for the “Tau Kappa Epsilon” (TKE) fraternity. The art of roasting a “whole hog” was handed down to him by a senior fraternity brother.
In 2013, Chef Mercer had a custom fabricated pig cooker shipped to Sedona from North Carolina, and began roasting whole hogs, ribs, sausage, chicken and oysters for his friends and guests. It didn’t take long for the word to get out, and the “Thirsty Thursday” Pig Pickin’ became a locals tradition.
Chef Mercer hosts the Mesa Grill Pig Pickin’ twice a month. From the first week in March to the first week in November, visiting guests and locals -in the know, reserve tables on the patio, enjoy a traditional Carolina barbecue while watching airport activities, and taking in the incredible Red Rock views (for which Sedona is known). The Pig Pickin’ includes happy hour bar pricing, live music, coleslaw, barracho beans, street corn, sandwich buns, peach cobbler, slow roasted whole hog, beef sausage, chicken and a weekly, seasonal special. Come out and help Chef Mercer roast the pig. The barbecue starts at 3:30 and goes until 5:30 …or until the pig is gone.
